I became a math teacher for the sadistic pleasure of forcing teenagers to think about numbers. Now, I've decided to branch out and make my fellow geocachers try to remember their algebra with the "Algebra" series of caches.
The listed coordinates will take you to the "rugged hike" parking area from which you can access the final. (It is also REALLY close to the first stage of a multicache I have hidden on the same mountain.) It doesn't look like a parking area but it is the place suggested by the Newington Park & Rec Dept.
To get the actual coordinates for the cache, you'll have to solve the equation:
2.4494897427832*sqrt(x² - 32.453x + 686.84492286667) = 1.9235384061671x
The larger solution is the "West" coordinate's minutes and the smaller is the "North" coordinate's minutes. The degrees are N41° W072°.
For a tutorial on how to solve this type of equation, see this webpage: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/solverad.htm You will also need to use some additional skills that are not covered in that tutorial, but they are covered under my "Quadratics" cache.
Happy calculating and happy hunting!
