Geocache Description:

This is a telephone booth. Left over form the days when the Monon Trail was a working railroad line. Most railroad companies operated their own private phone systems. They had long distance dialing from 1911. The phone had a double pole knife switch and no dial face. Throw the switch and it rang the dispatcher. At certain points on the route conductors would use them to call in reports, contact dispatchers about any problems, etc. Some also had shelves to complete and store paperwork. They were mostly out of use by 1969. They were usually located at the ends of passing tracks and sometimes at tunnel portals. These things were rendered obsolete by train radio, and cell phones have finally killed any that remained off.
