Much of Armagh’s history is centred around the establishment
of the legendary Emain Macha or NAVAN FORT, which lies to the West
of the City and was founded by the Pagan Queen Macha around 300BC.
The Navan Interpretative Centre offers visitors an understanding
of the diverse history of the area and the myths and legends linked
with Navan. Learn about Pagan Ireland, Celtic Warriors, Ulster
Kings and Queens, and the archaeological finds that pieced history
together. NAVAN FORT is the origin of a world renowned series of
stories known as the Ulster Cycle. The stories recall ancient Irish
legends, such as Cu Chulainn, King Conor, Deirdre of the Sorrows
and recounts famous battles like the Cattle Raid of Cooley.
Brian Ború, the High King of All Ireland, camped at Navan Fort
during his visit to Armagh to make offerings to the Church and was
buried in the grounds of the Church of Ireland Cathedral after the
Battle of Clontarf in 1014AD.
According to the early Christian scribes, Irish history began
with the founding of Emain Macha. Archaeologists have made many
fascinating discoveries at Navan, including the traces of a giant
Celtic temple.
NAVAN FORT is open to the public all year. To reach the carpark
location take the A28 out of Armagh. The Navan Centre is well
signposted on this road. SUGGESTED PARKING AT N54.20.610

When placed the actual Navan Centre was closed due to exhibition
renovation. This does not affect pedestrian access although there
are limited car parking places at the co-ords given until the work
is completed.
The cache is a medium sized, plastic container wrapped in green
covering, with usual cache swaps
It is well worth spending some time at Navan Fort, both outside
and inside when the Centre is open.
Both city cathedrals are clearly visible just above the cache
location.
The co-ords given will take you to two sets of steps and not the
actual cache location. At these co-ords now count the steps
(including both sets) and double this number. From here walk North
for this number of paces (fairly large paces). This should bring
you very close to the cache. Please be aware of muggles and replace
cache with care.
