St Mary's Church, Penterry, has an idyllic setting surrounded by
fields, with the nearest access across a field from a minor road.
The church is ancient, having a Norman window on the north side of
the sanctuary and a two light 15th century square headed east
window and is surrounded by earthworks, which have been interpreted
by experts as a medieval occupation site. The manorial history of
the area is complex, but Penterry seems to have been deserted quite
early on (certainly by the end of the medieval period).
Nearby is the Iron age Gaer Hill Fort, an unusual set of earthworks
providing a panoramic and strategically important view from the
Severn Estuary around to the west.
