Geocache Description:

This is a NIGHT ONLY multi cache and can only be done in the dark.

Have you got the nerve to tackle this cache in darkness? You will wander along dark mysterious tracks with eerie shadows and strange noises all around you. The hair on the back of your neck will stand up, as you will be sure there are eyes watching your every move.

The further you go, the darker it will become. If lucky, there will be a full moon to help you, but more likely, you will only have the beam of your flickering torch for guidance. You may hear the occasional distant howl or scream, and nearer to you, a rustle in the trees or a crack of a breaking twig. Dare you continue when all your instincts say turn back?

If you still think you are up to it, then gather together what you require for this spooky night cache. As well as your GPS, each team member will need a good torch and spare batteries, good footwear and warm clothing, a spare torch and yet more spare batteries, pen and paper, even more spare batteries for the GPS (as you’ll need to use its backlight) and finally something to calm their nerves!

Park at the suggested place, or somewhere else close by. Do not try to drive to the start as the barrier by the Boathouse Inn is locked each evening. Waymark it’s location; if you have to make a hasty retreat to the sanctuary of your car, you need to know where you left it! Walk to the start at the listed co-ordinates in single file. This avoids hazards like holes and branches on the side of the path. It’s also supposed to be safer this way, apart from the last one in the line getting picked off without the rest knowing!

When there, look around for a glowing four-leaved clover (It’s supposed to be lucky, and you need luck to survive what is ahead of you). You will need to hold your torch at HEAD HEIGHT to see this reflector. Like all the reflectors in this hunt, they are in trees above head height. At the base of the tree to which it is attached is a micro that contains the co-ordinates of the next reflector. All micros and the final cache are hidden this way except for one tree behind a wire fence, so that micro is behind the nearest fence post. At this point you still have the chance to retreat to the safety of your car, but if you decide to go on there will be no place to hide, no escape, and no one to hear you scream!

At each location, look for the reflector. If you cannot find it, then carry on walking (it’s a 2 mile circular route) as you may pick up the next one on the trail (you never have to walk more than 400m between reflectors). If you find another four-leaved clover you have been very lucky, as you have somehow managed to reach the final cache. We just hope you can make it back to your car alive! From here it should be a very easy walk of less than 500m.

For the First to Survive (sorry, find) there is a certificate, plus our new FTF Geocoin. If you take this, then it can only be dropped off in a new cache that you place. If you cannot do this, then just discover the coin and leave it for the next person who will place a new cache. If the FTF is brave enough to venture out and complete this cache before the end of October, there is an extra special reward hidden nearby. Instructions on where the FTF will find it are in the cache. This bonus will be removed on 1st November if nobody has claimed it.

20th Oct 06. It sounds as though quite a few of the rats bats and spiders used as micros have already vanished, but the reflectors in trees remain (because they are out of reach!). Rather than try and repopulate the creatures, I've uploaded a map of the route to be followed. Just continue and watch out for the next reflector.

Good Luck, (you will need it!)
