Geocache Description:

This is one in a series of caches dedicated to some of the facts and history of chewing gum.

Chewing gum adheres firmly to concrete and other hard surfaces, and can only be removed with great effort--power washing is usually required. It is not uncommon to see urban sidewalks and train platforms speckled with thousands of patches of dried, discarded gum. For this reason, the sale of chewing gum has been progibited in Singapore since 1992.

An old wives' tale states that chewing gum, if swallowed, may take up to seven years to become fully digested, and that swallowing gum could also result in the substance becoming lodged in the esophagus. Chewing gum does resist complete digestion by the body; is is generally expelled like other foods in 95% of individuals, though relatively unchanged. In rare cases, some individuals who have been known to swallow chiwing-gum regularly and who are predisposed can unfortunately aid the growth of bezoars within their stomachs or intestines.

In October, 1911, Beech-Nut chewing gum was first introduced to store shelves, and soon was a top place in a very competitive market.

In 1931, Amelia Earhart had her heart set on accomplishing the first transcontinental autogiro flight in a Pitcairn PCA-2. Pitcairn and Earnhart's husband, George Palmer Putnam, had seen to it that the world altitude flight in April had been well-covered by the news media, always eager to cover the achievements of the photogenic Amelia - such acclaim met each party's needs and they sought to capitalize further with the first transcontinental flight. Seeing a publicity bonanza, the Beech-Nut Packing Company, offered Earhart the use of its previously ordered PCA-2 if she would fly it coast-to-coast with the company logo painted on its side and accompanying promotion efforts related to its chewing gum. Brokered by her husband, who was known for his acumen at garnering publicity, she promptly canceled her order in favor of the Beech-Nut Autogiro. As it turned out, Earhart was not the first to accomplish this particular feat, but Beech-Nut still got its publicity.

The container you are searching for is a 2x2 plastic food saver. There is ample space to pull off the roadway near the hide. It contains a few small trade items and a FTF certificate.
