Ponder&Wander: Sad to say, the tow bit has been removed, and that's where the hidey hole was. Time to archive.

Walk over to the edge and take in the view of the old cannery. This was one of about a dozen canneries in this area that flourished beginning around 1915 until 1984. Saline Fisheries constructed this group of structures in 1915, and utilized them for canning salmon that was shipped all over the world. Sebastian Stuart Fisheries purchased the cannery in 1934, and used it for processing both salmon and tuna. In 1973, Whitney Fidalgo Seafoods rented the cannery for similar-type operations that continued through 1984.
Annual production peaked in 1919 with the canning of 45,000 cases (48lbs./case), and then again in 1947 (50,500 cases). In the early 1950's, production began to decline. In 1966, only 4,400 cases were processed and shipped. Then, in 1985, the cannery business came to a close for three reasons, a) loss of freshwater salmon habitat, b) overfishing, c) pollution. At that time, most of the cannery business shifted north to Alaska.
Today, due to increased technology in transportation and storage methods, frozen and fresh fish can safely be flow great distances. This also negatively affects the demand for cannery-type operations.
So as you look at the red structure below you, you are looking back in history, of an era that has come and gone.
Future plans for this structure don't include opening it to the public. Please respect all private property rights in this area, including the tables and benches at the overlook. Permission has been granted by the property owner at the overlook for this cache placement.
Bring your own writing utensil. Please replace container right-side up with existing camo cover, and beware of snoopy eyes.
