Geocache Description:

This cache is set near a well known landmark on Pennant Hills Road. It is also the second of three caches in the 'Triangulate' series.

This cache is located in the K13 Submarine Memorial Park at Carlingford.  There is plenty of parking at the memorial.

This park was donated to the City of Parramatta and the memorial by the widow of Charles Albert Harry Freestone, a survivor of K13 who after leaving the Royal Navy, emigrated to Australia and founded C. A. Freestone Pty Ltd.  The memorial honours those officers and men of the Commonwealth who gave their lives in submarines while serving the cause of freedom. It is called the "K13" memorial in particular memory of those lost in HM Submarine K13.

HMS K13 was a steam-propelled First World War K class submarine of the British Royal Navy which sank in a fatal accident during sea trials in early 1917. Thirty-two crew died and 47 others were rescued after being trapped for 57 hours.  Plaques on the memorial list all the Commonwealth Submarines lost in service - 55 in total.

The cache is a 350ml Tupperware box with log, pencil and room for small swaps. The initial cache contains:

  • a calculator for the FTF (could come in handy) - congratulations sspack!
  • toy car, 50 cent coin, pirate tattoo, dice, figurine and Post-It page markers for swaps
  • a card detailing the True Bearing from WP to Triangulate #3 - "The Hunt Is On!" - this stays with the cache

The Triangulate caches demonstrate a typical navigation problem for those without a GPS, namely, how to locate your unknown position based on bearings measured from two known locations. Triangulate #1 - "Pole Position" (T1) and Triangulate #2 - "Submariner" (T2) are the two known locations required to solve Triangulate #3 - "The Hunt Is On!" (T3). The T1 & T2 caches each contain a True Bearing from their location to T3 - plug these into some suitable mathematics or draw some accurate lines to fix the location of T3.

You will gain new respect for your GPS!
