Geocache Description:

West side of Halsey Forest

Come in the west entrance to the Halsey Forest (off Highway 2, east of Thedford) at N41.58.729 W100.30.645 and follow the gravel/pavement mix road (mostly badly maintained gravel) south. The cache is to the west of this road. There will be a short hike through typical Sandhills terrain to reach this cache. The terrain consists of soft sand, grasses, soapweed, sandburs, sunflowers, cedars and cactus. You do not need to go through any gates or cross any fences to find this one. This is public land, and hunting is allowed, so please be cautious, especially during the firearm deer seasons, which run from mid-November through the end of December. Wearin blaze orange is highly recommended during those times. This is almost a drive-up cache, so good for a leg stretch or to allow kids to run off a bit of energy. The area is very scenic -- if you have time, follow the road on south and it will take you through most of the Halsey Forest. Park at the edge of the road if you do not have 4wd. If you have 4WD, there is a turn-off just north of the cache for parking. Word of caution, this road is NOT maintained much, is full of soft sand and washouts and is not recommended beyond the point of this cache for 2WD vehicles in any weather, and not at all during inclement weather.
