In 1906 the SOS signal, Save Our Souls, replaced the CQD signal (Come Quick Danger) as the international distress signal due to an agreement between the British Marconi Wireless Company and the German Telefunk Organization. The thinking was that three dots, three dashes and three dots could not be misinterpreted. It was first transmitted in 1909, but didn't catch on internationally. It wasn’t until the Titanic sunk in 1912 (they didn't use SOS) that laws were passed in which it was stipulated that larger ships must have radio contacts.
