This is one heck of a hike through Horse Heaven Hills. During this
5-stage series, you will be looking for 6-inch tall ground stakes
with a military identification tag (dog tag) hanging from it. The
tag will have the coordinates to the next point stamped into the
metal. The final point is a BIG camouflage-painted metal military
ammo can that measures 17" x 14" x 8".
This day hike is about 6 miles (“ish”) depending on your route
selection, how terrain-savvy and physically fit you are. You should
plan for this to take about 4 hours ("ish”). I would not recommend
attempting this at night.
Very scenic so take lots of pictures. Stake #4 is a great place
for a picnic lunch while you catch your breath. Watch out for the
usual trip & fall hazards like uneven ground and loose rocks –
sturdy shoes are a must, and DEFINITELY CARRY WATER WITH
YOU. You will probably have to cross a couple of old fence
lines during your walk. During hunting season I would recommend you
wear a blaze orange vest for safety. If you are alone, it would be
wise to let someone know where you are going and dress for the
weather.
While you are out in the general area, and if you have enough
energy, stop by and check out Wallula Gap (GCJ19D) and Wallula Gap
Overlook (GCKVFE).
