Geocache Description:

The cache is located near exit 0 by I-65 and Court Avenue.

Welcome to Jeffersonville, founded in 1802 on the site formerly known as Fort Steuben, and even earlier than that as Fort Finney (1786). This spot marks the western city limits at present.

Jeffersonville, the county seat of Clark county, Indiana was laid out by Thomas Jefferson, who planned an organized park atmosphere of "trees and turf" for the community situated on the banks of the Ohio River. The town was named after Jefferson by then Indiana Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison (later president). The city served briefly as the territorial capitol, so Govenor Posey could be close to his physician in Lousiville.

The city began as a river city, and built its reputation building ships under the management of the Howard family of England in the 1830s. After the 1937 flood and the Great Depression, the federal government stpped in to establish what would become JeffBoat, now America's largest inland ship builder.

The lovely sign near the coordinates welcomes geocachers from around the world to Jeffersonville, please be respectful of the formal landscaping.
