Angeli del fango
4 Novembre 1966, l’Arno straripa a Firenze e allaga la città: è l’alluvione. I morti in città sono 39, il danno alle opere d’arte incalcolabile, ma da tutto il mondo un esercito di ragazzi si recò a Firenze a scavare nella melma per salvare opere d’arte e semplici ricordi di famiglie nelle case, chiese, nei musei e nelle biblioteche devastate: erano gli “angeli del fango”, una fortunata definizione del giornalista Giovanni Grazzini. A queste migliaia di ragazzi Firenze sarà per sempre riconoscente, alcuni di loro sono poi diventati famosi: Ted Kennedy, Lionel Jospin, Joschka Fischer, Joan Baez, Francesco De Gregori, Bruno Lauzi, Margherita Hack, Gerard Schroeder, Sergio Staino, tanto per citarne alcuni. A questi ragazzi, sul Lungarno Benvenuto Cellini, è dedicata una stele in ricordo di chi si prodigò per salvare un patrimonio dell’Umanità.
Angels of the Mud
November 4th, 1966. The Arno overflows to Florence, and floods the town. The deads in town are 39, the damage at arts and monuments is not calculable, but from all of the world an army of boys come to Florence to dig in the mire to save artworks and simple memories of families, in the houses, the churches, in the museums and in the devastated libraries: they were the "angels of the mud", a fortunate definition of the journalist Giovanni Grazzini. To these thousands of boys Florence will be forever devote, some of them become famous: Ted Kennedy, Lionel Jospin, Joschka Fischer, Joan Baez, Francesco De Gregori , Bruno Lauzi, Margherita Hack, Gerard Schroeder, Sergio Staino, just to cite some of them. To these boys, on the Lungarno Benvenuto Cellini, is dedicated a memory monument, a tribute to who gave his efforts to save a mankind heritage.
