Geocache Description:

GREAT NEWS!!! PONDS ARE HAVING A GRAND OPENING JUNE 2, 2007. FREE FISHING AND PRIZES. COME JOIN THE FUN!!!
Located Near The Willow Springs Ponds. Small Coffee Can

The Willow Springs Ponds in Fountain Creek Regional Park are open again after being closed for more than two years because of worries over pollution in the water and fish.

Once a popular fishing destination, the ponds now operate under a simple rule: Look, but don't touch.

"No fishing, no swimming, no wading. They're open for passive use only," El Paso County Environmental Services Director Jerry Haile said Thursday.

The El Paso County commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to reopen the ponds.

The ponds are south of Colorado Springs, between Interstate 25 and U.S. Highway 85/87. They're still polluted with perchloroethylene, an industrial chemical that seeped underground from the Schlage Lock factory to the north off Hancock Expressway.

The pollution isn't as concentrated as it once was, though. Contamination levels in the ponds have complied with state regulations since summer 2003, with a few exceptions.

El Paso County and Schlage Lock are negotiating whether the company should provide replacement ponds or if a permanent cleanup is possible.

I am hoping that someday these ponds will open again for fishing. When my kids were little we spent alot of time at these ponds.
This is such a pretty area with alot of hiking trails. When you find the cache you will understand the name. Be careful of Mugglers!! Alot of people bring their binoculars for bird watching and they could be watching you from a distance.
