Small ammo can containing some trade items and logbook. Trail is a bit steep in places but there are switchbacks and a few benches along the way, bushwacking in from Monte Sano Blvd. is not suggested. There is a lot of tornado and construction type debris in the rocks.
The good news is that it's down hill on the way in, but that means uphill on the way out. One of three caches placed on the LandTrust property along the Trough Springs/Bushwacker Johnston trail.
This one is a bit past Trough Spring. There is NO trail currently after the spring and benches...it's in the works. So, time to do some of the namesake, bushwack.
One of the things that Bushwacker Johnston did prior to his surrender to the Union forces was to have his men hide their best weapons in the nearby caves and rocks. The Confederates gathered up the worst junk they could find to turn over. It is mentioned in the Unions report that the weapons that the Confederates turned in were the sorriest that these soldiers had ever seen. These fellas had been hiding caches way back in 1865 and before as they used this method of stashing supplies all around the Tennesssee Valley.
2nd Lt. J. W. Lindsay was an officer in Co. A of the 25th Alabama Calvary Battalion. Born Aug. 15, 1840 at Larkinsville. Enlisted in Mobile March 28, 1861 as private in Co. K, 2nd AL regiment. Discharged at Ft. Morgan in Aug, 1861. Re-enlisted Oct. 10, 1861 at Iuka, MS in Co. C, 26th Alabama Infantry. Served until 1862. Re-enlisted in either 1862-1863 as a private in the 25th AL. Surrendered at Huntsville, AL, May 11, 1865. 1907 residence was Larkinsville.
