Geocache Description:

Inspired by the Motorway Mayhem series, A-Road Anarchy are meant to be nice easy stops to break up a journey, and maybe a chance to show off some local features that are normally hidden close to those busy A-Roads.

For us when we see this rock we know that Aberyswyth is very near and our long journey to visit Red Kite, is nearly over. It always fills us with exitement but also amusement that Elvis is painted so boldly on a rock out in the middle of no where.

I didn't realise that this rock had a history until I was writing this cache page and was nosey enough to see if there was anything on the net about it. Suprisingly, I found out that it has the same meaning to many other travellers returning back to Aberyswyth and has been famous in Wales since 1962.

The Elvis rock lies just inside the Powys border on the A44 in the Plynlimon range, on the road from Llangurig to Aberystwyth.

Its original conception was political rather than for the love of the King of Rock and Roll but within days it became the monument that it is today.

To read all about it's history and to view a slide show of interesting photographs of how it has changed over the decades go here:

Because the road is a busy and dangerous Welsh 'A' road we have not placed it near the rock. Instead we have hidden it at a big lay-by just before the rock.

You cannot see the rock from the lay-by and you MUST NOT attempt to view it further down the road by foot as there are no footpaths.

After you have found the cache and you resume your journey towards Aberyswyth by road you will naturally see it and will not miss it. The Elvis rock is large and you will see it even if you are driving. You MUST NOT attempt to see it if you are driving from the Aberyswyth direction as the rock is facing the opposite direction and is on a bend.

11/08/10 this has been reinstated as a small cache so that trackables can be left and picked up. We have glued in very strong earth magnets to keep the cache safe in the high winds. We would appreciate if you could leave the cache in the exact position we placed it for maximum safety from the weather. Thankyou.

You do not need to go near the road to get the cache and all normal precautions need to be taken when stopping in a lay-by near a busy road!!!

ENJOY this drive-by and the glorious Welsh views. HAPPY CACHING!
