311 is a strange band.
Their evolution and direction have been strange.
Actually, when you think about it, so many other bands have gone a
similar direction. Many bands have mellowed and become more
mainstream over time. It just seems weird in this case considering
the genre. I'm not sure that 311 really fits well to any genre.
311, back over a decade ago, created powerful music. Much more
powerful than what they create today. It was heavily influenced by
hip-hop and urban styles. It was full of great sounds, and it was
diverse.
I am not a fan of rap. But I am not closed-minded to the rap style
either. I dislike gangsta and ugly stuff, but I think some artists
use rap and hip-hop styles very creatively and effectively. Early
311 has rap rhythm and style, but it is very creative and smart. I
won't go any more into a comparison of 311 rap and other rap. It is
too opinionated, and so I will spare you that.
Over the years, the band mellowed a lot and has gone more pop
mainstream. Their music has become more ho-hum and predictable.
They are talented and their style trend appeals to a lot of a
people, and that is why they can continue to go in that direction.
Hey, a large portion of the public wants ho-hum.
However, in my opinion, they have lost the power and real energy in
their music. Hey, I am not against ho-hum really. I just think it
is a shame that a band that has so much punch ain't punching.
The early 311, the stuff that is in the album that is shown in the
background of this page, is stuff that I love. The CD stays in the
CD changer in my truck.
It is different than how they sound today. It is a sound that is
definitely limited-edition, because they are not creating it
anymore.
And so I leave you with lyrics to "Jackolantern's Weather" by 311.
This is a creation from the 311 of the past.
Well I beat a bad rap when I skip a soul trap,
Just trippin' and laughin' at the crap.
Dap is what I get, the best skins that I hit,
You know we rock the ****** joint and we split.
Singin' and rhymin's what I'm better for,
When I describe I'm a scribe with a metaphor.
I use a simile lightly,
Cause that ***** played,
The common way most ryhmes are made,
You know.
I rock like this,
I flow like that,
But all those comparisons are just that.
Kickin' different styles I'll be right here,
Today, tomorrow, next week, and next year.
The kid is smart,
The kid is clever.
Stompin' in Jackolantern's weather.
Backpack strapped cause the world is cold.
Headphones pumpin' don't you know.
The kid is smart,
The kid is clever.
Stompin' in Jackolantern's weather.
Rocks his hood and plays it mellow,
While maple leaves change into yellow.
