Geocache Description:

This cache is an ammo can placed close to a railbed converted to a walk/bike path. The grade from parking to the cache is relatively steep. The trail is paved with crushed gravel until the last few feet, when the path must be left to find the cache.

Rutland was served by three stations on the Boston & Maine line that ran from Boston to North Hampton through the town. This cache marks the western most Rutland station, appropriately named "West Rutland". Imagine stepping off the train onto the platform. Can you see where the station was? Where the platform and tracks were? Cachers can explore the railbed to the east and pass through Charnock Hill cut, which was recently restored by Wachusett Greenways. Note the new tunnel under Charnock Hill road, allowing unrestricted access through the cut! The railbed also extends well to the west through Rutland State Park. Several caches lie in both directions along the railbed.

This trail has been restored by Wachusett Greenways. Visit them at www.wachusettgreenways.org to learn more.

Learn more about the railroad that ran on this trail at the Boston & Maine Railroad Historical Society web page.

Items in the cache include:
