Geocache Description:

Halfmoon Lake was used as a holding pond for many of the logs that were driven down the Chippewa River and its tributaries in the mid to late 1800s.
In 1857 a canal or “flume” was built from the Chippewa River to Halfmoon Lake. Much of this flume was underground, and the logs were directed from the river to the flume sending the logs into the lake for the lumberyards and sawmills to process into useable lumber. (many of these logs still reside at the bottom of the lake)

1884 was the peak year for lumber production in the area, with nearly 250 million board ft. of lumber produced in that year alone. The logging industry in the Chippewa Valley began to decline in the early 1900s due to fewer and fewer pine forests in the immediate area to harvest.

The Sherman Lumber Company in 1884 was very close to where the Mayo One helicopter hangar currently is now and the flume was between the hangar and the beach.

While the city of Eau Claire and much of the Chippewa Valley was born from the logging industry, health care makes up a large portion of our economy now and it’s ironic that both important industries made their home on the same shore of Halfmoon Lake.
