This “natural arch” was built in 1862 by Calvert Vaux; the co-designer (with Federick Law Olmsed) of Central Park. A casual observer will note that this impressive archway was intended to look somewhat natural – with boulders pushed together – and less brick and mortar (which is used as a hidden support).
The cache is near the famous Dakota apartment building. The Dakota is where Beatles legend John Lennon lived with his wife Yoko Ono before he was shot outside of the building on December 8, 1980. The cache is also near Strawberry Fields, the much visited John Lennon “Imagine” Memorial.
Bring a geocaching pal if you search at night. This spot is close to a busy street, but feels quite remote after dark.
Finally, let your geocaching conversation echo across what is the longest and darkest arch in the Park: RIFTSTONE ARCH
Enjoy!
