Geocache Description:

A short walk up hill over open farmland from Sir Walter Scott’s View to the Bemersyde standing stone, then onto to the cache. Fantastic panoramas of the Borders and the Eildon Hills.

G:UK cache rating

Parking is available at the view point known as Scott's View, just follow the road signs. Scott's View is a location well associated with Sir Walter Scott. It is said that when Sir Walter Scott died, his horses stopped here on their way to Dryburgh Abbey. They were so used to stopping here for Scott to look out over his beloved Borders that they stopped by themselves.

From the parking area, go through a small timber gate and work your way up the hill. The stone is obvious and not easy to miss. Bemersyde standing stone reaches around 3.00m high but has most probably been erected in modern times. It stands to the south west of the summit of Bemersyde Hill, a few miles to the east of Melrose. Despite being a modern standing stone, the stone itself is as good as standing stones go. The location is outstanding and the views are simply magnificent over the Eildon Hills to the west. You can get a feel of where Scott got his inspiration.

Please use the gate to access the cache location and re-hide the container out of sight. Dogs should be kept on a lead and extra caution should be taken in the springtime lambing season.

Enjoy the views.
