World's Best Lost Treasures: Take One! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

KBI: I retrieved the cache today. Container and contents will be recycled soon as a new hide.

The theme of this cache was created with permission from the TV network Discovery, parent of The Travel Channel. It took some heavy and patient negotiating on my part to convince them to allow me to give away copies of their TV show. Once they finally agreed, the only thing they asked was that I limit the life of the cache to no more than three years. They asked for no money. I think that was a pretty generous deal.

As that time is approaching, and as I have run into a frustrating glitch in trying to make another batch of DVD copies, I have decided to go ahead and retire this old hide.

Counting my previous cache at this location (GCGJFJ), I have been camped out here for almost seven years. It’s time for me to free up this spot so someone else can hide a cache here.

Thank you to everyone who visited, and for all the nice logs!

Geocache Description:

A few years ago the Travel Channel aired a short bit of documentary about Geocaching. It was a segment of a one-hour docu-tainment special called World's Best Lost Treasures. The show counts down a list of what the writers chose as the “world’s best top ten lost treasures.” It’s an interesting program (even IF the writers decided Geocaching only ranked at number seven).

The five-minute segment on Geocaching features snippets of interviews with Groundspeak founders Jeremy Irish and Bryan Roth (Rothstafari). Jeremy demonstrates how to hide a cache – da Vinci's Cable (GC21F4, multicache, now archived) – which Bryan and his wife then proceed to hunt and find for the cameras. According to the cache’s online logs the filming was done October 12th and 13th, 2001. Geocaching History!

Seen the show? It gets re-run occasionally. I recorded and watched it recently, but instead of just erasing it from my DVR I decided to make it the theme of a new cache. If you haven’t seen the show yet, now you can!

My cache is a Lock&Lock container stuffed with free DVD-R copies of the documentary. I even edited out all the commercials for you!

Please take only ONE copy, and please do not place anything else in the container. (Travel Bugs and other trackables are okay.) No trades please, just help yourself to one video disc. I’ll restock the container with more DVD copies from time to time, and will appreciate any reports of the supply running low.

After you watch your DVD you may keep it, throw it away, return it to my cache if you like, or better yet ... put it in another cache someplace!

These DVD-R copies of World's Best Lost Treasures are provided at my (minimal) expense via generous permission from Discovery Communications Inc, owner of The Travel Channel.

The cache is in Sharon Springs Park. The park closes at 11:00 pm.

Mosquito protection is highly recommended during the warmer months.

Congratulations to first finder webmaestro, who scored a standard KBI First Finder certificate and the FTF prize: a Coleman Lensatic Compass!
