The Cache is definitely a challenge. It is located on Stage Island outside of Biddeford Pool. I rated this a 4.5 for overall difficulty and a 4 in terrain. It is a tough cache to get to and a tough cache to find.
This is a two "Stage" cache that Team Pinepoint decided to hide. There is a clue at the first stage which will lead you to the final cache which is an ammo box we recycled from the Marsh Mellow cache.
There was a previous Stage Island Monument cache that was one of our favorites two years ago this week in 2004 when we first found it. And after the other one disappeared we vowed to one day put one back in this spot. This is a REALLY great spot for a cache and is deserving of one. Hopefully this one will stay in place for the duration.
Stage Island is one of six islands that are just outside of Biddeford Pool. Basket Island is right next to Stage island and has several houses. Negro Island is the one after Stage and is said to have been so named as it was part of the underground railroad operation which was trying to free slaves by helping them get to Canada. The next island is Wood Island which has much importance as a historic lighthouse locale.
The Stage Island Monument was erected in 1825 as a day guide to what was then known as "Winter Harbor".
The monument is 60 feet high and is still used today to assist mariners in keeping deep water passage in and out of the Pool. The Monument is also NGS Benchmark OC2003 so you can log that too! Bonus!
In 1883 the Alice G. Norwood wrecked on north side of Stage Island on September 29th. All survived. There was an average of two shipwrecks a year from recorded history until 1915. Obviously, there was a great need for the monument.
In the late 1800's, Stage Island was used by the herring and cod fleets who erected staging to dry their catches and where Wood Island keeper – Frank Verrill, had also once lived.
Also of note is that Biddeford Pool on the Northern side is considered to be the oldest settlement in Maine.
The ammo box is full to the brim. Please take the travel bug whomever is first to find. Don't want that to stagnate all winter. Cache on!
Don't read the hint unless you have to.
