Geocache Description:


This cache celebrates the 175th anniversary of this community institution. The original building at this 23 acre site was built in November 1831. Until the 1940’s all of this land was farmland and forests, from Selwyn Road all the way to South Carolina. The first area housing development opened in 1957. As you pull into the parking lot (N35 08.461 W 080 50.050) the building on your right (SE) was erected in 1889, on the site of the original 1831 structure. The “community house” in front of you (ESE) was originally a wooden library building, dismantled and reconstructed from Fort Greene (a World War I training camp on Wilkinson Boulevard), but was replaced by the current building in December 1975. Ground was broken for the new building on your left (ENE) in June 1993. There is an old graveyard to your South. The oldest stone marks the grave of Silas Alexander, who was buried on October 27, 1831. Silas’s father, Hezekiah, signed the Mecklenburg Declaration, which was a model for the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Silas’s childhood home is the oldest building in Charlotte (visit link) A plaque on the north side of the cemetery commemorates black slaves who were buried there, but without headstones.

The cachement area is open from dawn until dusk. It is not necessary to traverse the graveyard.
