Geocache Description:

This multi-cache is a 4 stage multi, please hunt with caution during periods of snow, ice and rain as the final 2 stages can prove to be difficult.

4/4/2021: The final cache is now offset by minus N 00.010' or 62 feet south. See log from same day for more info.

Project Nike was a US Army project, proposed in May 1945 by Bell Labs, to develop a line-of-sight anti-aircraft missile system. The project delivered the America's first operational anti-aircraft missile system in 1953, the Nike Ajax. A huge number of the technologies and rocket systems used to develop the Nike Ajax were re-used in a number of roles, many of which gained the "Nike" name (after Nike, the goddess of victory from Greek mythology). The missile's first-stage solid rocket booster became the basis for everything from the Nike Hercules missile to NASA's Nike Smoke rocket, used for upper-atmosphere research.

Leftover traces of the approximately 300 Nike missile bases can still be seen around cities across the country. As the sites were decommissioned they were first offered to Federal agencies. Many were already located on Army National Guard bases who continued to use the property. Others were offered to state and local governments while others were sold to school districts. The left-overs were offered to private individuals. Thus, many Nike sites are now municipal yards, communications and FAA facilities (the IFC areas), probation camps, and other uses. Several were completely obliterated and turned into parks. Some are now private residences. Only a few retain any integrity and preserve the history of the Nike project. There are also a few sites abroad, notably in Turkey and Greece.

The Background:
Due to the current threat level of the U.S. we need to cover all bases and make sure no location has been compromised. Though all the known Nike sites have been decommissioned there seems to be a miscalculation in our books and there is one more that has yet to be checked out as it was the one the Govt. kept just in case. Kept secret due to the fact we needed an ace in our sleeve and did not want to give up all our protection from foreign threats.

The mission:
The one site that was never mentioned and held completely secret was the Nike Rx-9 site which was very near two other sites in Northern VA. It seems it had been so secret no one has any information on it. Since you have already been briefed on the ins and outs of the Nike Project which the public have not been aware of yet, I need you to locate the imbedded information at the pre-existing Ground station (W-83C)and Launch (W-83L) sites. The information obtained there will lead you to the Rx-9 Launch site (stage 3)which should hold a clue (coordinates) that will lead you to the Rx-9 Control station (final stage). The safety of our country depends on you!

At the First Site (N 38° 59.863 W 077° 18.865) it seems there was a marker that had embedded info within the dates. We think the key was subtracting 15683262 from the first two dates posted on the marker. This would seem to give the Northing of the launch sites coordinates.

At the Second Site (N 38° 59.530 W 077° 19.640) the last 7 digits in the FSN number for the panels seemed to be the key but we are not quite sure. The key we think is subtracting 72632 from it to get the Westing.

****We ask that you use extra caution in investigating these sites as you know Agent John Norman Williams did not make it back and his whereabouts are unknown, he might have defected but we are not quite sure.****
