Geocache Description:

The fast deteriorating remnants of Wonthaggi’s glory days of coal mining.

Best attacked from Graham St West, there is a car park about 200 meters past the Coalfields Caravan Park. (The large building on the left as you approached the car park is the old coal fired power station.)

The Central Mining area was the first area to be developed when the Powlett coal fields were opened up in 1910. The first miners lived in tents in a very swampy area, when the town of Wonthaggi was developed to the East, the Central Area was developed into an efficient coal processing area. The only remnants of this era is the Number 5 brace, the rescue station and the entrance to the McBride Tunnel. The Brace serviced the Western Area mines via a haulage line and the McBride tunnel servicing the central area. The Brace is the area where the coal is sorted and transferred into railway trucks to be hauled off to the big smoke.

Now a State historical reserve it’s not hard to imagine the hive of activity in this area. Concrete outlines of buildings, stores, winches and engine sheds show that this was a large industrial site. The Brace, because of its wooden construction is barely holding together and sways in the wind and creaks and groans with every breath. The brick rescue station has been restored and information panels tell the story, that the miners would light a fire in an adjacent building and then they would enter a dark smoke filled room and “rescue” dummies which were secreted around the room. The nearby entrance to the McBride tunnel is close by the rail trail from Wonthaggi.
