Geocache Description:

Rated a 2 for terrain due to the need to take care on rocks near the cache. Please rehide cache well as this is a very popular tourist/muggle area.

Ballycastle beach is the location for this cache. It is near rocks on which there is a life sized carved face or faces?. There have been many explanations as to how the carving came to be here one of which is of a little girl and her father who lived in a house behind the rock. They collected salt water from the sea and left it to evaporate in the sun to make salt and sell it to make money, but tragically the little girl fell into the water and was caught by the strong swirl of water within the rocks which was so strong it killed her and her father went out in his boat to the rock and carved her face on the rock in memory of her. Another story is of an early christian priest thrown to his death into the Devil's churn by rowdy local druids. There are supposedly a number of faces carved into the rock, with only this one remaining as it is in a more sheltered corner. The Devil's Churn is the area of great turbulance at the bottom of the stairs cut into the same rock from which you view the carved face/faces. It is thought to be caused by an underwater tunnel in the rock/seabed running out to sea. If you go when the water is at just the right level, it acts like a blowhole which is out of synch with the arriving waves sucking away dramatically only to blow water high into the air seconds later. Which is exactly what happened when we were setting this cache. Scary!! Take the A2 out of Ballycastle, then off on to the B road towards Corrymella, about a mile along this road you will see a long wooden bridge at the "Salt Pans", just beyond this bridge is a viewing rock from which you can see the face/faces. How many faces can you see? We can see lots or maybe it's only our imagination. Cache is a silver cylindrical container about 2” long, holding the log sheet only, bring your own pen or pencil to sign the log.
