This is a traditional cache ammo box off the Coyote Creek Trail, Reach 1.
As Neil Young so menacingly croons. . .”Down by the river. . .” Well, there’s no menace down by this river (creek actually), just a beautiful site for a very significant flyway for birds migrating north and south through our state.
Coyote Creek and the fairly new Coyote Creek Trail, Reach 1, is a very special place for me. I go biking on the trail at least two or three times a week. I am sure to see Egrets, Hawks, and if I’m lucky, Great Blue Herons.
Coyote Creek is the longest creek in Santa Clara County. It flows for 60 miles, starting in the mountains of Henry Coe State Park, filling Coyote and Anderson Reservoirs, then flowing down through the Coyote and Santa Clara Valleys. There are recreational facilities along much of its length, including the Coyote Creek Trail and many city and county parks. The Coyote Creek Lagoon and the Alviso salt pond trails are the last reaches of publicly-accessible land along Coyote Creek before it flows into San Francisco Bay.
This part of the trail opened just recently and was dedicated June 2006. The Coyote Creek Field Station (Riparian) is nearby. It is the only non-coastal site in California monitored year-round for more than a decade. It is supported by a large group of highly trained volunteer banders and it is the single urban site in the region where long term effects of riparian restoration on wildlife have been measured.
I would invite you to hike or bike this reach of the trail while you’re here. From the McCarthy Ranch trailhead to the Dixon Landing Road trailhead and back is about 2 ½ to 3 miles. If you are traveling by car, you can park at the following coordinates: N 37 25.557, W 121 55 471.
The cache is located off the trail and down closer to the creek. It is best to go off at the following coordinates: N 37 25.835, W 121 55.694. BE CAREFUL, not to slip on the straw as you traverse down the slope from the trail.
There is a special FTF ziplock package with a special treat.
