Geocache Description:

Remembrance Day often brings to mind images of hardship and death on the battlefields overseas. However, a forgotten piece of local history involves war related loss of life here on this side of the Atlantic.

On that tragic day in 1943, a Hudson twin-engined bomber exploded over Summerville, Hants County, Nova Scotia. The four crew members on board were killed instantly. They had been on training exercises at the time, and were flying the big Hudson back to the Stanley airport when the explosion occurred. Two of the crew members, Officer George Cowie and Officer C.A. Griffith were New Zealand pilots training in Canada. Following recovery of the bodies, these two pilots were buried in Windsor, far away from their native New Zealand soil. The coordinates above bring you to their graves. Make note of the information inscribed on their grave stones.

For the final cache location, the North coordinate remains the same. For the West coordinate, take the month of the year that these two pilots were lost (January=1 and December=12), multiply the number by .03 and subtract it from the posted West coordinate. The cache is a cammoed 2 kg. peanut butter jar containing a log book, toy airplanes, airplane stickers, a parachuting officer, Hudson Bomber bookmarks, etc. As well, there is a FTF prize of a set of unactivated TB dog tags.

While visiting this area, we are asked to avoid parking on the grass, and to be respectful, keeping our distance from any funeral procession that might be taking place.

Thank you to Scott Sanford and the Windsor Town Council for allowing this cache to be placed.
