At the posted coordinates is a large rock, from the entrance it
looks quite normal but it truly is a wonder. Through the years
there has been many assumptions of what had created this odd rock.
After examination of the phenomenon, Corps of Engineers geologists
and those of other agencies have concluded that it is a natural
geological formation. Although such formations are extremely rare,
similar patterned boulders were found in one other location in West
Virginia. The Geological Survey, U.S. Department of the interior,
explained that the rock is part of the Conemaugh geologic series
that was deposited million years ago during the ?????? period. It
is surmised that the rock is a large loose boulder that fell from a
parent outcrop somewhere higher up the slope, many decades ago,
before the present trees grew.
