Along the St. Lawrence river near the town of Tadoussac in Quebec you will find an immense area of sand dunes also known as the the Marine Terrace.
The Tadoussac village is composed of a little village at the feet of the mountains, at the confluence of the Saguenay and the Saint-Lawrence River.
The town of Tadoussac is also known as the place where colonization got its start in North America, the very cradle of the New World, thanks to the alliance concluded in 1603 at the Pointe-Aux-Alouettes in Baie-Ste-Catherine between the Montagnais, the Malicites, the Algonquins and Samuel de Champlain who offered the help of his military against the Iroquois against the right to populate the area. Tadoussac and Baie Sainte Catherine through a ferry is the only passage to the North Shore.
This marine terrace (sand dunes) was formed following the passage of the gigantic glacier that formed the Saguenay Fjord thousands of years ago. As the glacier approached the river, it transported sediment, earth, rocks and sand. The lighter material was blown away by the wind, leaving behind the soft sand, which, over thousands of years shaped the geography of this beatiful area into beautiful golden dunes.
Make sure to bring along a good pair of binoculars to enjoy the majestic views, flora and fauna of the area.
