Ice House Ruins: Lower Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dippedidooda: Wellington Park didnt want people to find a geocache at this location due to its historical significance and sesnsitivity within the landscape. But its marked on wellington park map and open to the public. I was willing to work with them to come up with a mutually agreeable solution but they took the cache. I gave up.

Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at the ruins of one of the icehouses that were used from the 1850’s to the 1890’s. The icehouses had thick walls and brushwood roofing; they were packed with snow during the winter which froze into ice and this was carved into blocks and taken to Hobart by horse.

The lower icehouse ruins are not as prominent as the upper ruins but both can be reached by parking at the top side car park at The Springs. Walk up the stairs on the right side of the site of the old Springs Hotel and you will come to a T-junction. Turn left on to the Milles Track and after 5 minutes branch uphill to the right at the signposted junction to the Ice House Track.

The track goes up steeply and it can be quite slippery after rain. The weather can change quickly, so go prepared with warm and protective clothing for all weather conditions, regardless of season.

The ruins are about 3m off the main track and there is a tiny track that leads off the path to them.

This cache's lives:
Container wet and kindly replaced by Forthferalz when visiting in April 2007.
Wet again, I replaced it in Feb 2011.
Wet again, incarnation #4 was placed October 2014 and has two small round screwtop containers (one for logbook, one for swaps) housed in a PVC pipe container - huge thanks to Stainless Steel Rat for his amazing work to construct it.

Please ensure lids are screwed on fully as it is such a wet environment!

It is placed right behind the large round rock at left end of ruin (position described to ensure that the ruin is not dismantled in looking for a cache!)
