Geocache Description:

This location is near the Vaughn Creek Pumping Station. You do not have to enter the fenced area of the pumping station. This area is under watch from video cameras and you do not have to go near the facility. I have received permission to place this cache from the Water Resource Manager and please do your part to make it continue. Do not go pass the no parking sign or the no tresspassing sign. On the pumping station side of the road and bridge. 2 feet off the ground.

The Story of Lake Lanier:

The initial concept of a lake near Tryon began, in 1915, as the vision of Dr. Jervey, Dr. Palmer, and Dr. White. The proposed sight was “the rich bottom lands along Vaughn's Creek as it made a loop off the slopes of Hogback Mountain.” It was to be named for poet Sidney Lanier. Plans were put on hold because of World War I. After the war, a Western NC development group approached the Chamber of Commerce about reviving the plan in order to “lure visitors from the outside to see the area's scenic wonders and maybe they will buy some of it.” And they did, and we did, and here it is!
