GizmoKyla: Hi The Red Kite

One of our roles as a reviewer is to monitor our region for caches that have been disabled for a long time, have had a reasonable number of DNFs or appear to require some maintenance. This is done through running a query on a database of all the caches in our region that looks for such things or by cachers submitting Needs Archiving logs as it appears maintenance may not be being carried out by the CO.

It would appear that this cache may benefit from some attention by the CO. May we ask that the owner checks the cache and sort out any problems with it or gives an indication of when it may be up and running again for people to find. If this cannot be done or if the CO no longer wishes to maintain the cache then the listing should be archived.

Of course if the CO has visited the cache recently then please post an Owner Maintenance log indicating that they have done so, enable the listing, and all should be fine.

In the future, if a listing is going to be disabled for a long time then posting periodic notes to the page (once per month or so) keeps people up to date with what is happening.

This isn't a requirement to fix the cache immediately but if it's unlikely to be done within 30 days could the CO post a note to the cache page giving an indication of when the maintenance will be done, or an indication of why it cannot be carried out.

If you plan on repairing this cache, please log a note to the cache (not email) within 30 days so we don't archive the listing for non-communication.

Emails to us may be missed or go astray and it would be a shame to archive the listing due to missing correspondence.

The Geocache Maintenance guideline explains a CO's responsibility towards checking and maintaining the cache when problems are reported.

Sadly if there is no response to this log after 30 days we may have to archive the cache.

Please note that the guidelines say that if a cache is archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ staff for lack of maintenance then it will not be unarchived - Unarchiving a Geocache

How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

A steep climb from either Clarach Bay or Constitution Hill along the Ceredigion Coast Path with fantastic views across Cardigan Bay and Snowdonia in fine weather.

You may start from either end of the section of the coast path between Aberystwyth and Clarach Bay, although parking will be easier at the Clarach end.

The newly opened coast path now has a level, gravel suface which makes it a much nicer walking experience. The old steps have now been removed and the footpath has been re-routed. Although is level and has a new surface, it is slightly higher than the original path and a bit steeper. It is more suitable for pushchairs than previously, although you would need to be strong to push a wheelchair up here from the Clarach end.

From Aberystwyth you may take the cliff railway or walk up Constitution Hill. From the Games Room you can then either: cross by the concrete steps and take the lower path to use the actual cliff path; or take the upper level by the frisbee golf, follow the marked footpath to the stile just before the radar station and go across the fields - this direction involves climbing over a steep steps/stile just before the cache location so you need to be pretty fit and able to climb at heights.

There are benches at strategic points along the coastal path, and just in front of this cache there is now a small platform with a picnic bench, so you can sit and take in the views. You may see dolphins, porpoise and seals from here, as well as many different types of gull, cormorant, peregrines, red kite and stonechat.

You are looking for a small black and silver bison tube. It is now in plain view. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE BISON JUST UNSCREW THE SILVER PART. If you drop it please make sure you retrieve it and replace as found.

Safety Notes: As always, care should be taken whilst searching for this cache. The path along the coastal section is steep-sided in places . The weather may change very quickly so make sure you take appropriate equipment with you. It is not advisable to attempt this cache in very windy weather. I know from experience when setting this one that strong winds can get up at a moment's notice! You may be vulnerable and at risk of being blown off the cliff.

The cache is NOT located close to the edge of the cliff so please do not search there.

I hope those who found the Rainbow Series too easy will have a challenge with this one.

Happy hunting!
