Geocache Description:

SOLLIA KIRKE, LITEN OG VAKKER. - SOLLIA CHURCH, SMALL AND BEAUTIFUL

Sollia church was consecrated september 7 th 1738 and it is one of Norways best preserved churches from the barock. The church is decorated inside by the painter Erik Wallin in 1740 – 45. Knut Haugland is a guide and he have written a book about Sollia church. It is a pleasure to let Knut guide you in the church. His mind is clear as glass and he’s got good knowledge in history. Here is a bit of the first chapter in his book about Sollia church:

”The four first familys that settled down in Setningsdalen was from Storelvdal. They came here by an initiativ of the Danish civil servants and had their protection. They came here to ”cultivate the ground for their descendats”, and form the basis of cultivating the forests. This was the area that the civil servants had their finantial interests - !

These four familys came to an area that belongs to Ringebu. And they had to organize as told by them. 40 km to travel across the mountain to their parisch -…. They had a great task. Much greater than they might understand. They did see the seriousness of the matter, a day in 1730 when 3 peoples on their way to church in Ringebu was missing and found dead in the mountain! - … By the turn of the year 1731/32 was the desition taken; they would ask the king to get permission to build their own church in Setningsdalen for four familys and their servants.”
