The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded to an individual in combat. The Medal of Honor is awarded by the President in the name of Congress to a person who, while a member of the military, distinguishes himself or herself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against the enemy of the United States.
The deed performed must have been one of personal bravery or self sacrifice so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish the individual above his comrades and must have involved risk of life. Only 3,410 of these medals have been awarded in the history of the United States.
Larry G. Dahl, a 1967 graduate of Oregon City High School was one of these recipients. With complete disregard for his own life, Specialist 4 Dahl threw himself onto a North Vietnamese hand grenade while engaged in intense combat. His actions saved the lives of his fellow soldiers but he was mortally wounded.
