This cache has been archived.

seekhim17: The area has overgrown with ivy. I went to switch out the log and could not find the cache. I believe the hiding mechanism broke and the cache is gone.

BINY In My Life – Craig Steven is the tenth and last cache in the BINY In My Life series. BINY stands for Because I Need You, thus the caches in this series are for people I need, and am thankful for, in my life. Each cache will carry the name BINY (pronounced ben-ee) In My Life followed by the first and middle name of the person.

In the Fall of 1989, I headed off to my sophomore year of college at Olivet Nazarene University outside of Chicago, IL. Sometime during my first semester, I was talking to a guy in my (required) fine arts class. I don't remember exactly how, but he ended up coming over to my on-campus apartment and studying for a test with me. He made some stupid joke mis-pronouncing “Sphinx” that made us laugh hysterically, and there was born a deep friendship that lasts to this day. That is when I met my best friend, Craig Steven.

After the Sphinx joke, we read the “Murphy's Law” poster I had hanging on my door. You would have thought we were drunk the way we laughed (we weren't). We started hanging out together, playing ping-pong together and ended up becoming roommates our last two years of college.

After graduation, Craig got married to the girl he was dating when we met. I got to be in his wedding and then we headed off to different parts of the country. Craig moved up north in and around Michigan and I moved south to Texas. Of course he came to Texas to be my best man in 1993. Since then, Craig has moved several times as the pastor of local churches, but we have always kept in touch. I've been “up north” for a visit once and he's come “down south” twice. We talk on the phone regularly, but it is always a highlight of my year when we get to see each other.

There are many things I could say about my best friend, but the one thing that most impresses me is his love for people. Pastors get chewed out a lot it seems, and there are lots of people who feel the need to set their pastor straight. Sometimes it's easy for me write off people like this, but Craig loves people and wants everybody to be happy. I honestly cannot understand how people like Craig do it, but I get the feeling this is what Jesus was talking about when he called pastors “shepherds”. Craig has a true pastor's heart. If I have ever met a person created to be a pastor, it would be Craig.

Another thing I appreciate about Craig is the way he makes me laugh. And the really funny part...he doesn't always do it on purpose. One of favorite memories was when we were riding to a place where he was gonna preach when we were in college. It was nighttime, and as I reached down to turn on the car's dome light, Craig touched the light. When it came on, he thought he turned it on and commented on how “cool” it was that it came on merely by touching it. So I let him “turn it on and off” several times (all the while operating the control on the dash that he could not see). Then he mentioned “the Clapper” and I told him my car light worked like that, too. He “clapped” the dome light on and off several times and I just about had him snapping it on and off when I could control my laughter no longer!

So Craig, thank you for being my friend all of these years. Everybody should have a friend like you.
