Geocache Description:

Welcome to Niagara County Community College!

Seeing that I call this place "home" working here everyday and also being an alumni I thought it would be nice if others knew about the college's history and details. Hope you like the information and the cache.

The College’s History

Niagara County Community College was founded on November 8, 1962 but there were no buildings, staff, courses or students. All of that would come in a remarkably short time causing the American Association of Junior Colleges to call NCCC "a miracle of accomplishment." The first college president, Dr. Ernest Notar, ceremonially opened the front door admitting NCCC's first 343 students on September 30, 1963 in Niagara Falls, New York. The original campus was the old office for the Nabisco Shredded Wheat factory in Niagara Falls, New York, and was nicknamed "Nabisco Tech". As the college grew, facilities in Niagara Falls expanded to include the former Third Street School, several homes nearby, the Parkway Inn, the Waldorf-Niagara Motel, the former Olin Laboratory, a former Mormon Church, and a portion of the DeVeaux School. It soon became evident that these temporary facilities had been stretched to the limit and a permanent campus was necessary. Decisions about where the new campus should be located were the subject of debate for some time. Of the many possible sites studied, Pekin was the preferred choice because of its accessibility and nearness to the center of Niagara County's projected population. The Wendt property at the intersection of Route 31 (Saunders Settlement Road) and Route 429 (Townline Road) was eventually selected for the location of NCCC's permanent campus in June 1966. Ground was broken in September 1970 for the eight-building Sanborn campus. The first classes on the new campus began in the spring semester of 1973. It was not until the move to Sanborn that the college offered more than five curricula.

Campus Layout

The campus is located on the corner of New York State Route 31 and New York State Route 429. It consists of 287 acres of semi-wooded land and eight interconnected buildings described as "architecturally striking." The buildings are as follows

A Building

The Ernest Notar Administration Building contains the college’s administrative offices. It is named for Dr. Ernest Notar, the first president of the college from 1962-1975.

B Building

The Business Education Building is the location of the Business Division.

C Building

The Science/Technology Building is the home of the Life Sciences, Nursing, and Mathematics/Computer Science/Physics and Engineering/Technology/Chemistry Divisions.

D Building

The Henrietta G. Lewis Library Learning Center is the most architecturally striking building and has a collection of 95,391 books.

E Building

The Humanities/Social Sciences Building houses the English, literature, linguistics, languages, philosophy, history, government, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and economics departments.

F Building

The Fine Arts Building contains the Fine Arts Division and the college's Fine Arts Theatre and Coffee House Theatre.

G Building

The Student Center holds the Student Life offices including Student Activities, The Student Senate, Student Programming, the LEAD Program (Student Leadership and Development), and over 35 additional clubs and organizations to help students. The G Building Student Center also contains several culinary arts classes, the college bookstore, Security Department, lounge rooms, two cyber lounges, wireless internet access, a game room, a bowling alley, and houses the campus’ Dining Services.

H Building

The Health Education Center includes a gym, a multi purpose gym, a newly built fitness center, and an Olympic size swimming pool.

The Henrietta G. Lewis Library

In 2005, the Library Learning Center was given this name because of a one million dollar grant from the Grigg-Lewis Foundation, the largest gift in the college's history. The Library has 95,391 books, 565 subscriptions, 195 microform titles, 279 linear feet of archive titles, 6,747 multi-media titles, and 157.3 linear feet of special collections. It also has an online catalog and web-based reference sources. It is open 64 hours a week, including Saturdays.

Today NCCC has approximately 5,000 students enrolled in over 40 programs of study. Thousands of others take advantage of the College's extensive credit-free courses, short-term vocational programs, as well as many cultural and social events.

Information gathered using Wikipedia and the NCCC website.

PLEASE DO NOT... DO NOT ENTER FROM 429 TO LOOK FOR THIS CACHE. It is on NCCC Property, I'm sure the neighbors wouldn't want you talking a stroll through their yard. Cache smart. Park at NCCC and take a 2 minute walk.
