Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE ABOVE CO-ORDINATES.

The prize cache in a short circular series!

Please take this printout with you - the other caches in the series will tell you which gaps to fill in :

Approaching the cache site, you will pass under a vast viaduct - three spans and 108 feet high. It's made from massive chunks of Revidge grit brought here most probably from the Hoghton Quarry nearby. Look carefully and you'll be able to see the masons marks - and also the telltale white stalactites which have formed over the last 160 years as rainwater has dissolved out the lime mortar since the viaduct was built in 1846.

The present-day river has cut like a saw down through the rock about 100 feet in the 17,000 years since the end of the last ice age. You can judge how much that is because it's roughly the height of the viaduct!

In the river bed you'll notice how some of the rocks have been scoured into smooth, rounded basins by stones being swirled around in them.

Please take care along the river bank - don't get too near the edge. Dogs must be on a lead.

Come here at low light levels and there's a chance of seeing Roe Deer.

I hope you have enjoyed this series!
