A paddle only memorial multi-cache on the Upper Manatee River
Nestled deep in the wilderness of eastern Manatee County is the wandering waters of the Upper Manatee River. Much of this river still has open wilderness on both banks and much of the beauty of the ‘real Florida’ can still be seen here. This multi-cache can only be completed via kayak or canoe as all parts are bound by the gentle current of the river.
If you have your own boat there is a great little (FREE) public launch site located near the Rye Wilderness Park. The launch itself is located at N27 30.909 W82 22.187 and is a great little spot to paddle down river towards the Manatee River or upstream to the dam at Lake Manatee. If you are land locked you have an option to rent a canoe or kayak from Ray’s Canoe Hideaway (941)747-3909/(888)57CANOE (easily found on the web!) as most parts of this cache are located within an easy paddle from their river location. There is also a neat little campground located at N27 31.379 W82 22.861 on the river where we have seen many people camping out so if you want to spend more then a day working on this cache this might be a spot to check out.
The posted coords will take you to a very profound spot on the Upper Manatee River that Paddler Found and I discovered while paddling a year ago and we have been wanting to bring others to this spot and no better way then to provide a fun little cache that starts at this spot. When you arrive here you should be able to find the information that is required in order to continue your search regardless of the water level. Here you will find discarded headstones of which much investigations has not been able to determine the source. Some are recent like Dennis J. Sanders who past away in 1990. Others such as Eli Lee passed away in 1866. It is most definitely a mystery and anyone who can add some information to this we will gladly enter it into the cache information. We started a webpage for these headstones (but the information you need for the cache has been conveniently left out) that you can access here - (visit link)
When you arrive at the posted coordinates you will need to locate the headstone for a young Nancy J. Reeder, a two year old who passed away in 1959. You need to find the day of the month she was born, and the day of the month she passed away. Don’t try to use the headstone webpage for a cheat as we were sure to drop this information from the page before listing the cache. Log these dates as DAYBORN and DAYPASSED and move on to one of the other sections of this multicache, and remember you don’t have to do the parts in any particular order.
Part 2 - N27 31.242 W82 24.046
At this location you will find a magnificent structure that each of use would love to own. We have seen everything grow from the foundation up and this is quite a site to see. While admiring this structure take notice of the deck of the second floor. Count the number of round pillars that support the roof over this structure and you will have this little piece of the puzzle, log this as PILLARS.
Part 3 - N27 31.326 W82 23.771
Ah, the good old days of sitting back while a friend pushed us back and forth on the swing. How great it would have been if that swing had a view of the lake to entertain our eyes while gravity entertained our inner ear. At this location you will find some wonderful green piping supporting some swings along the waterfront. Count the number of swings you see here and then you solve another piece of the puzzle as you log this as SWINGS.
Part 4 - N27 31.249 W82 23.256
As you near this spot you will find a large structure out near the water build and supported by some large posts. As the sun shines down you will notice some of these posts have pointed silver tips. All you need to do here is count the number of silver tips that you see here and you’ll have the puzzle piece TIPS.
Part 5 - N27 31.306 W82 23.017
As you paddle your way along the river and approach this spot you will find yourself needing to count some letters. But the only letter you need to count is the letter “S” (and don’t forget there is more then one side to everything so circle around to count them all). Log this clue as LETTERS.
When you have completed all the parts to this cache you can now determine the final location for this multi-cache with the following formula :
Final –
N27 DAYBORN + PILLARS . DAYPASSED X LETTERS + 305
W82 DAYBORN + SWINGS . TIPS X LETTERS + 791
When you achieve the coordinates for the final you will find yourself a few steps off the river finding a full sized cache containing some small trade items, a log and a pen. This is a find to be proud of and take a second to reflect upon where you have come from and where you’re going. Please be sure to re-hide the cache as well as you found it so the next paddler will have the same fun as you did.
Enjoy the hunt and enjoy the river and all the beauty if offers.
