A Public trail that loops around a significant wetland in behind
the OPP GHQ and Georgian College.
This trail starts from a road allowance just south of Georgian
College or can be accessed from in behind Georgian College. The
former parking area was being overused and is now marked NO
PARKING, you can park in short term parking at Georgian College or
take your chance on the roadside.
Follow the trail down the hill to a couple of old buildings
(pump houses) and then loop through the wetland and back up the
other side till you turn back toward the buildings again.
I've been told that the old bridge across the stream is now just a
couple of steel beams but you should have no trouble crossing these
as they are solid and relatively wide.
The water from the Wetland is collected in the reservoir here
and is then fed by a large pipe to the pump houses that you passed
on the way and then on to the steam plant up the hill. The
Steam plant once supplied heat for the whole Huronia Regional
Centre through underground tunnels connecting all of the buildings
on the property. At one time this plant even supplied heat
and water to a large farm located where OPP GHQ now stands.
The trails are now mostly used for exercise by Georgian College
students and OPP recruits. Speaking of the OPP; please be
aware of your surroundings and avoid heading up any trails that
lead to the steam plant or the OPP building or you may need to play
a game of 20 (or more) questions with OPP security.
Enjoy these special trails and keep your eyes open for some
surprises along the way.
