Geocache Description:

Located at the Marathon Airport

This Geocoin & Travel Bug Stop-Over is located near the terminal at the Marathon Airport. This cache can be used for trading geocoin & travel bugs or they can stop over for a rest on their journey across Ontario & Canada. If you are able please trade TB's & coins, so there is always a supply in the cache for trading or discovering. The cache is a short walking distance from the main parking lot. The parking lot is located at 48° 45.530N and 086° 21.051W. About 10 meters of bushwacking is involved to the cache location.

Besides the logbook and pencils, there are also several general trading items in the cache - McDonald's Hummer, 2-3 compass keychains, several RCMP Musical Ride Trading Cards, a Lions Club of Marathon Free Ticket and 1 or 2 other items.

Although the airport was originally built with dirt airways many years ago, this phase of the Marathon Airport opened with paved runways about 20 years ago during the building and initial operation of the Hemlo Gold Mines. A permanent terminal building was built a couple of years after the runway was paved. At one time, several airline runs regular flights into Marathon, including Austin Airways, Bear Skin Airlines and a couple others. At one time, Austin Airways had a direct flight from Marathon to Toronto and return. The main service was from Marathon to Thunder Bay. Gradually due to declining passengers the regular air service was stopped. Now the airport is just used for private airplanes, charter flights, helicopter service and Air Ambulance Service.
