Geocache Description:

This geocache is located at the site of the former 161 Fox Farm which was originally owned by the Glann family. It is an easy cache designed to share some history, but you might have to contend with muggles.

The Hiawatha Silver – Black Fox Corporation Ranch Unit No. 1 of Apalachin, NY began in 1791 when a land grant was given to James Glann for fighting in the American Revolutionary War. James’ son took over the farm, which he in turn gave to his son George as a wedding present.

I’ve been told that the property was one square mile. It was considered one of the finest and most modern Ranches ever built. It contained seventy-six oversize pens. Each pen had a modern up-to-date house for the Foxes, which was under observation from a watchtower both day and night. The Ranch was surrounded entirely by a high guard fence which is lighted at night with their own electric lighting system. They also had their own pumping and refrigerating system as well as a cookhouse, where the food for the foxes was prepared.

The Hiawatha Ranch was stocked with 60 pair of the finest, registered, pedigreed Silver Black Foxes that money could buy. They came from Prince Edward’s Island. The progeny were prize foxes and sweepstakes winners in the fox shows in both the United States and Canada.

The Fox Farm went out of business when Sable (a weasel-like mammal) became popular.
