Second Chance: What Fir? Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Past Strawberry on Hwy 87, continue to FS300, then out toward Milk Ranch Point. High-clearance vehicle is necessary, although the hike from Squirreled Away would not be difficult. Parking is available in a campground, which can be found by continuing north past the cache less than .5 mile, then take fork to the left.
What Fir?
Be sure to notice the fir tree, we've named Second Chance. You see, one day last spring, while exploring the rim, looking for a nice place with a fantastic view for a picnic and an opportunity to relax, we encountered Chance... he was on his back, so to speak. He was most likely blown over by the March snow storm of 2006 which dumped at least 30 inches of snow (and more) in some places.
Well, he's a pretty rare tree for these parts, and we just couldn't let him slowly die... so, we spent the next 4 hours maneuvering and pushing and working like crazy to get him up right. So much for the relaxing part of the day.
He still had his tap root, and we've been out nearly every month since we propped him back up to give him some water and check his progress. And now, you can too! Take him a drink and say "hey" to him from us... We think he is going to make it.
So, that's What Fir.... a Second Chance at life. Hope you enjoy the hike and view. We've seen juvenile bald eagles fly below us from here, and hope you do too.
