What's the difference? Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Lakeshore Geocachers: This one has served it's intended purpose and has been pulled from service...the container failed to keep anything dry and the red lighted post has quit doing what it was supposed to do too and just isn't worth replacing. Thanks to all who ventured out here for this experiment in GPSr accuracy...

Geocache Description:

How far off is your GPSr compared to another one?

This one is really easy. It is a small cache disguised as an illuminated driveway marker. It was not meant to be hidden but kind of a community service to the caching community. The cache is located on private property with a wide drive way nearby. Don't worry, the land owner is VERY Geo friendly! We rely on our GPSr's to lead us to the ends of the earth but is it accurate? How does the reading you get compare to someone elses'? As it says in our Garmin GPS60 owners manual, we can expect <15 meters(49 feet)accuracy 95% of the time, and 3-5 meters(10-16 feet) with DGPS (WAAS)enabled 95% of the time. The problem is that a hider of a cache may be at the upper end of this band, while we, the searcher, may also be there too, that could add up to anywhere up to a 98 foot error or a 20 to 32 foot error with DGPS! That leaves a lot of area to cover with our searches (almost 200 square feet)! To log this cache, you just find it,(the easy part)put your unit on top of the lighted post (told you it was easy...if you do it during the day the red light will go on) and mark your location (create a waypoint called TEST)and record in the log the North and West coords then post those coords in your online log.(that was the hard part)We reserve the right to just hit "delete" on any log that doesn't have these numbers...Then you will have to go out and do it again. It will be interesting to see how far off everyone's units are. I think it would be neat to test those GPS enabled cell phones while you are at it...This is by no means a scientific measurement as it was taken with a commercially available hand held GPSr unit(a Garmin GPS60) with 9 ft accuracy and 9 sats locked (DGPS was enabled). It would have been nice to place this at a benchmark but there is not one nearby. We took a reading with our old eTrex (ol' yeller)as well and got N43.18.574,W078.47.481 with a 23 feet accuracy and 9 sats locked (also with DGPS enabled) Sorry, No FTF prize for this one...it's just too easy to find.
