Geocache Description:

The cache is located in a National Recreation Area. It is in rugged but beautiful territory and you accept certain risks inherent in this kind of back country. You are looking for a normal cache in an ammo box. The terrain and difficulty will depend on various factors - Has it rained?, Is it hunting season?, What kind of vehicle am I driving? The cache is at approximately 3200 ASL. How high your climb is will be dictated by the above factors.

There are prizes for the first and second finders. First finder has the choice. You will probably not want to bring toddlers and small children to this cache because of the final cache location. During various seasons, you may have a variety of wildlife to contend with. This is not unusual in this kind of territory because it is NOT exactly Times Square!! To reach this cache, you will have to park at a fairly accessible trail gate and hike to the cache. During hunting season, you MUST wear something with Blaze Orange. It can be hazardous not to. (At various times, this gate will be unlocked to allow handicapped access to some prime hunting territory. When it is open, DO NOT park anywhere on the trail until you reach a second gate where there is marginal room to turn a vehicle around.) Although it is not a strenuous hike, you will find that it has it's challenges. Among these challenges are copious quantities of mud with opportunities to drop in on Uncle John down in the bottom of the valley!

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ATTEMPT TO TAKE A STANDARD AUTOMOBILE DOWN THIS TRAIL! YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT IN AND OUT!

A four-wheel drive or very capable, high-ground clearance truck are the only vehicles that should be used on this road. If you hike in, don't block the end of the trail, as per the posted signs. Although I saw no signs indicating that this area is closed after sun down, I would NOT recommend going into this territory after dark.

Having given you all the cautions about going into this area and the difficulties of getting to the cache, you will be going through some beautiful territory to get there. There are people living in the area but it is still largely unspoiled country. There are hiking trails throughout the area that offer a little something for everyone. From the cache, it is only a 2 1/2 or three mile hike to the monument that marks the shared border with Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina. Hiking maps of the area are somewhat spotty and I would recommend a local guide to make that venture. That hike, according to a local outfitter, would take several major elevation changes and trails that are creeks in wet weather. Sure would make a memorial hike!!
