Geocache Description:

Bigelow Bridge over the Cattaraugus Creek is significant as an intact example of a 'Pennsylvania' (PETIT) Truss. Built in 1928, this type of truss was more commonly used for railroads. The bridge was designed for heavy truck use, bringing farm products from the rural southern tier to the Niagara frontier.

Cattaraugus Creek drains a wooded rural portion of Western New York from Java Lake to Lake Erie. This creek is on the Nationwide wild and scenic river systems list due to it's remarkable geologic value. Here it is the boundary between Erie and Cattaraugus Counties also.

I have ridden(as a child),then drove over the Bigelow Bridge too many times to count. For over a year I watched as the new bridge was being built, not 250 feet from the 'Bigelow'. I was afraid they were going to take the 'Bigelow' down, but I am happy to say that they left this bridge as a historic place. It is now only for foot traffic.

Park in the fishing access parking lot off of Randall Road on the Erie County side. I also remember when Randall Road was Route 240!!

If anyone knows who Bigelow was, please let me know. There in a road not far from the bridge with the same name.

The cache is a micro, bring your own pen. Enjoy the bridge and the view. Also check out the historic marker for more information about the bridge.
