The Old Pines trail takes you to the heart of Glen Tanar's magnificent forest and you are never far from the sparkling Water of Tanar. The path consists of a mixture of grass surfaces and crushed stone. The route is waymarked – follow the Pine Cone symbol on the waymarkers. Please take note of any warning and information signs that the Ranger Service and the Estate have displayed. The recommended starting point is from the Glen Tanar Visitor Centre. There is a ‘pay and display’ car park clearly signposted. These caches have been placed by agreement with Glen Tanar. Glen Tanar National Nature Reserve is one of nine National Nature Reserves in and around the Cairngorms National Park. Glen Tanar provides a great opportunity to explore Scotland's classic Caledonian pine forest in search of its elusive wildlife. A darting red squirrel or an acrobatic Scottish crossbill might be above your head as you wander through ancient trees or, from the banks of the rushing river, you might see the silvery flash of a salmon powering upstream. Beyond the trees, birds of prey patrol the managed moorlands and you could catch a sight of hen harrier, merlin, osprey or even a golden eagle. In Glen Tanar there are a range of waymarked paths, picnic areas by the river or viewpoints with benches. Here you at one of the viewpoints and take a while so sit and look around you. A few minutes after leaving this cache and heading for ‘Scots Pine’ you will see on your left the Queen’s Well – named after Queen Victoria who visited Glen Tanar in 1874, and there is an inscribed stone with V and 1874 on it. This cache was originally placed by Rambling Meanders and has now been transferred to GCUK to become part of the Old Pines Trail.
