Cornworthy Priory must have been an impressive place - all thats
left are the gate house ruins - but the size of them looks more
like a castle than a gate!

Photo taken by Spannerman - hope you don't mind!
Cornworthy Priory, was founded between 1205-1238 (the most
probable date is 1233). Initially there were 13 Augustinian nuns in
residence. The founder is unknown, although it is speculated that
it may have been Eva de Braose, although this is contested in
William Whites History dated 1850. The house appears to have
remained poor and obscure. In 1535 the net income was over 63
pounds. In 1377 there were 9 nuns in residence and in 1539 there
were 7. The gatehouse is all that remains of the priory today. A
nearby spring supplied water to the priory, which included a
chapel, chapter house, infirmary, dormitory and refectory. The site
is currently protected under permanent pasture although the
gatehouse remains a prominent feature of the local landscape.
Interesting place - with very little published history
available. Take a camera - great photo's should be possible. Cache
should be an easy find. Trade items left in cache.
