North of the North Esk river one can find the ruins of what is
"universally regarded as one of Scotland's finest buildings: in
many ways THE key building of the early Georgian period in this
country"
*. Unfortunately, despite it being an 'A' listed building, it
is decaying mainly unnoticed (German geocachers would call it a
'Lost Place'). The Mavisbank Trust tries its
best in conjunction with Historic Scotland to restore the place to
its former glory, but funds are limited. They aim "that by the end
of 2009, the Mavisbank Restoration project will be complete,
restoring the shell of the building, creating access into the site,
partially restoring the designed landscape and creating a network
of paths throughout the site" *, but they
still need support.
Part of the challenge for this cache is to find an access route
to the building - I recommend doing some research beforehand.
Please mind the livestock when crossing fields. The cache is
outside the security fence surrounding the ruin. Good luck.
